PNGC GLIDING COURSE APRIL 01
FAA SQUADRON PARTICIPATION

The recent PNGC Gliding course at RNAS Lee on Solent was supported by FAA Squadron assets to very good effect.
John Eatwell, (Streak Shadow), Richard Roberts, (Mistral),
Tony Ashmead, (Pulsar) and Phil Moore, (Auster) all had a great time providing nine students with what was for most their first experience of piloting a light aircraft.

The flying exercises involved a Navex, 'Lee - New Arlesford - Petersfield - Lee', (for all but the high speed Pulsar who did a bigger one). The navex was followed by a tactical reconnaissance of Thorney Island Airfield, Emsworth and Portsmouth Dockyard.
This territory was reported as being part of the new breakaway state of 'SELSONIA' (formerly West Sussex which had declared independence from the rest of UK since they found huge oil reserves under the old airfield at Tangmere).

All students expressed much appreciation and greatly enjoyed the flying provided by The Squadron, considering it to be an outstanding highlight of the course. They all benefited from significant learning experiences especially in regard to the navex, which was totally new to all of them and is not a normal feature of ab initio gliding course flights never loose sight of the airfield. In addition to navigating and observing, once airborne, students were encouraged to do 100% of the flying which they all found to be challenging, rewarding and a lot of fun.

Squadron pilots had a great time in excellent weather and were well looked after by the gliding club who provided hot meals at the launch point throughout.
Many thanks to those who donated their their time and aeroplanes to such a good cause especially Richard Roberts who came all the way from Lincoln in his little Mistral.
I look forward to further opportunities to participate in this rewarding activity at Lee and the other air stations.
