GUERNSEY AERO CLUB RALLY
Friday 12th to Sunday 14th September

This 32nd International Air Rally was organised by one of our Squadron members – Colin Ferbrache at Guernsey Airport.

Participants could either take part in the Navigational exercise which started at Dinard Airport on Friday 12th which involved flying a mystery route of about 100 miles, photographing pin points with a ‘fun’ camera and being ‘timed’ over the legs, this part finishing with a spot landing at another French airfield. Competitors then carried on to another spot landing at Guernsey airport.

Alternatively visiting aircrew could opt for a direct flight to Guernsey airport and could still be eligible for prizes for furthest distance flown, spot landing, Concours D’Elegance or most aircraft from one base etc.

Squadron members who attended the rally were Michael and Charmian Ryan, John and Janet Beattie, Martyn (Doc) and Carol Holliday who all flew from Yeovilton and joined up with ‘locals’ Mike and Barbara Tidd and Colin and Val Ferbrache.

A welcoming lunch was held in the Clubhouse and in the evening De Vic Carey, the Bailiff of Guernsey (See Careyroots.com), was the official host for the Islands Reception Committee for a Vin D’Honneur.

On Saturday there was a pre-flight competition and a Concours D’Elegance judging or an optional car Treasure Hunt round the island. This was followed by a Bucks Fizz reception by the sponsors in the Club House which preceded an ‘interesting’ aircraft fly past.

The high point of the Rally was the fancy dress Ball in the evening, the theme of which was 100 years of Flight. Live music was provided by ‘City Limits’. The presentation of trophies and prizes was made for navigation, Concours D’Elegance etc and for the best fancy dress.
Our Squadron members all sat together and thoroughly enjoyed the lively evening. The whole week-end went very well with fifty two aircraft taking part and the weather was ideal.
Perhaps a few more Squadron members could participate next summer ?
