PORTSMOUTH NAVAL GLIDING CLUB

LEE ON SOLENT 7th - 13th JULY

Two FAA Squadron pilots, Michael Ryan and Phil Moore helped to provide air experience flying for the Scholarship Students on the course. Unfortunately two other squadron aircraft due to take part were unable to do so due to adverse weather. Of the seven students taking part in the course, five were able to undertake assessment as to their military aircrew potential (the other two were already experienced PPL's.) The flying exercises comprised a Navex, - where students were required to complete the flight planning form before departure and a tactical reconnaissance. Marks were awarded for the students individual efficiency where Navex marks reflected piloting aptitude and Tac R denote observer skills. Thus each student was graded on how likely they were to become a successful pilot or observer. The students expressed much appreciation for the gliding and powered aircraft flying and they benefited from significant learning experiences, especially in regard to the Navex, which was totally new to all of them and is not a normal feature of ab initio gliding courses. In addition to navigating and observing ,once airborne, students were encouraged to do 100% of the flying which they all found to be challenging and rewarding.
