Yeovilton

SPECIAL VISIT
|
This visit, so well organized by Michael Ryan, was enjoyed by thirty nine members and guests who arrived in a variety of aircraft including a Bonanza B36, Commander, Cessna 421, Cessna 182, Piper J5 Cub, PA28, Yak 50 and a Robinson 44 helicopter. Some came by car. A welcome address was given by Commodore Richard Clapp RN, CO of RNAS Yeovilton, followed by a most interesting presentation - "Test Flying Today" by Simon Hargreaves, current test pilot and a former CO of 899 Squadron. Simon talked about current and future VSTOL aircraft, held the attention of everyone and answered many questions before departing in his company twin for Wharton. The next day he was leaving for the USA for a considerable period. The next presentation by Commander Chris Neave RN, Cdr (SHAR), gave a very good insight into the Harrier world with slides and video clips and another good session of questions and answers. Tea was taken in the wardroom before the coach took members to Podimore Travel Lodge to change into 'black tie with decorations'. Returning to the Wardroom for the "Ladies Guest Night" we enjoyed a very good dinner, fine wines and some excellent speakers including our own Admiral Sir Ray Lygo who once again stole the show ! Almost all stayed for the dancing to a rather loud disco (or are we all getting too old ?) and the bar was very well supported into the small hours. The next day members were then treated to presentations on the 'Lynx Mk8' by Lt/Cmdr. J. Reed RN,CO of 815 Squadron and the 'Commando Helicopter Force' by Cmdr. M.Salter RN CO CHF. Following this members were then transported to the RN Historic Flight and a superb tour, talk and slide show by Cmdr. Bryan Wood RN Retd., the General Manager of the Historic Flight. It hardly needs to be said that we all look forward to the return to flying of the Sea Fury, Firefly and the Sea Hawk. |
