SHOBDON

FLY-IN AND LUNCHEON

This Fly-In was very well organised by Michael Ryan and well attended with fifteen Squadron aircraft arriving at the airfield. Shobdon is a 1940's airfield built as a WW2 glider training base situated seven miles NNW of Leominster in lovely Herefordshire countryside with high ground and the Welsh hills to the north and west. The Herefordshire Aero Club runs the airfield upon which there is Helicopter training, gliding, microlights, paragliding and an aircraft maintenance company.

The flight into Shobdon was made more interesting by the challenge of a Tac-R and Precision flying competition organised by Michael Ryan whereby pilots were given a target location and were expected to provide information about the target when flying over it at a set time. After this pilots were expected to arrive over the control tower at 500 feet at a certain slot time, and points would be deducted for seconds early or late. Small prizes were awarded to the successful winners who were Michael Bonham Cozens, 1st, John Eatwell 2nd and Leo Baker 3rd.

After landing members were whisked off on a local tour of the area which included Shobdon Church, the Norman tower of which dates back to the 12th century, and a visit to David Corbett's workshop where he is building a Europa.

On returning to base some sixty members, including some local members of the FAAOA, and guests, assembled in the magnificent marquee for a most enjoyable lunch. The Guest of Honour and Speaker was Commodore Richard Clapp Royal Navy, Commanding Officer RNAS Yeovilton who spoke on "The future of Naval Aviation in the new Millenium".
