THE GUERNSEY AIR RALLY

9 / 12 SEPTEMBER 1999

The Rally is organised annually by the Guernsey Aero Club and is a very popular and successful event the Director of which is Colin Ferbrache, one of our Squadron members.

The first part of the rally is a flying competition which this year commenced at Caen Airport on Friday 10th September with a Navigational exercise. This involved aircrew in planning a mystery route of about 100 nautical miles around Normandy ending with a spot landing at Granville. One hour only before take off time aircrew are given an envelope containing a 'fun' camera, plotting information, a time schedule to overfly all turning points and en-route photos for spot identifications.

On arrival at Guernsey Airport a welcoming lunch is served at the Clubhouse followed by the Guernsey States Vin d'Honneur official welcome in the hangar in the evening.

On Saturday there is a pre flight competition , a reception in the club house, and an 'interesting aircraft fly past' in front of the Club house. In the evening there is a Presentation dinner in the Club hangar, and dancing with everyone wearing full fancy dress. This year the theme was Treasure Island ! A wide range of prizes and trophies are awarded at the dinner for the various aspects of the rally.

Having recovered from the night before, a leisurely departure is made on the Sunday.

The Guernsey Rally is very popular and aircrew taking part in the fun come from all over Europe. Pilots can opt for the Sportsmans class, or if more experienced, or a previous winner, or intending to use GPS, will be in the Open class with stricter scoring.

Squadron members taking part in the 1999 rally included Michael and Eve Bonham Cozens with Ron and Jan Dobree-Carey in Beech Bonanza G-MAPR, Philip Cardew and John Beattie.
