Squadron members were granted permission to fly in to witness this fine international display in addition to which some members operated a variety of aircraft from the light aircraft landing strip to fly members of the public to raise funds for the Historic Flight. There were three Tiger Moths (Denis Woodhams, Dave Findon, Graham Wright and Phil Shaw, a Stampe (Martin Holloway), a Yak 52 (Dave Baddams and Will Hynett), a Chipmunk (John Beattie and Rob Bradshaw) and John Coulthard flew the Bidford J3 Cub. John Beattie had the operation well organised with an early start and using slots between the main air day flying displays. Those taking part in this air day 'side show' are to be congratulated on their dedication to raising funds for the Historic Flight and they would be more than happy to repeat the operation anytime anywhere. Other members who flew in were Phil Moore in his Auster, John Moffat Grumman AA5,Ceryl Johns, Hughes 500, Peter Lovegrove, Beech 76, Paul Herring, Stearman, Philip Cardew from Bodmin, Cessna 172, Ron Dobree-Carey, Kittiwake, (which was so familiar with Yeovilton airspace that it flew itself in !) and Michael Bonham Cozens , Bonanza, who flew in from La Baule, France. On official duties was another Squadron member, the President of the Association, Admiral Sir Ray Lygo who came in his Cessna 421C from Farnborough. We all witnessed a very fine flying display with an international flavour and a wide variety of aircraft. The day ended with a very spectacular and noisy commando assault. One of the best displays of the day was given by two of our own members Lt/Cmdr. Dave Baddams and Lt/Cmdr. Dave Mackay who were C.O. and S.P. of 800 Sqdn. Sea Harriers respectively. |
