A Fly-In to Compton Abbas, the popular Dorset hilltop airfield, kicked off the Squadron's activities for 1998. Although the weather was fine on the day, the grass airfield was waterlogged and muddy. Nevertheless a number of members arrived by air, including Clive Smith in his Chipmunk, who commented upon arrival that he hoped that he would not need floats the next time! Others braving the mud and puddles, requiring short landing technique, included Tony and Jill Ashmead in their Streak Shadow, Neville and Gwen Duke in their PA28 from Bournemouth, Dave Mackay in a Cessna 120, Dave Morgan and Dave Baddams in a Yak 52, both from Yeovilton. Andrew Jeans arrived in his Maule from his own Compton Chamberlayne farmstrip. Arthur Record flew in his Mistral from Yorkshire and Denis Woodhams in a J3 Cub from Bidford, who gave the controls to Denis Stanley. Other members arrived by car including Michael and Charmian Ryan, Nigel de Candole and Martin Holloway. In all about forty sat down to enjoy an informal lunch in the clubhouse. Denis White had to depart early but gave an amusing impromptu speech before he left. After coffee the assembled company had to tax their brains with an Aviators Quiz compiled by Ron Dobree-Carey. This was won by David Morgan (senior) who was presented with a prize of a 'goodies' basket generously donated by Michael Bonham Cozens. |
