This was the first time that the Squadron had an event together with one of the groups of the Association, and we were very appreciative of the invitation from the Mersey Group to meet at Caernarfon. Unfortunately the British weather did its worst again, definitely not VFR through the Welsh mountains and only three Squadron aircraft made it to the airfield. John Moffat flew solo all the way from Glen Rothes in Scotland in his Grumman AA5. Peter Lovegrove flew in from Bournemouth in a Beech Duchesse and Michael Bonham Cozens and Eve flew in from Dublin in his Bonanza. Nigel de Candole and his wife Alison drove up from Dorset as did Ron Dobree-Carey, noting on the way through the beautiful Welsh mountains that there are not very many good forced landing places around. Phil Fillingham came all the way from the USA and we are indebted to him for a lot of our photographs. The Mersey Group of the FAAOA were at Caernarfon in strength, and the event had been well planned and co-ordinated by Norman Edwards. Everyone gathered at the Caernarfon Flying Club on Saturday morning and this was followed by an informative and very entertaining tour round the Air Museum made under the guidance of the Curator, Group Captain Phil Langrill OBE. Charles Gough, Chairman of the Mersey Group presided over an enjoyable Dinner held at the Prince of Wales Hotel, and the following day there was a visit to the imposing and magnificent Caernarfon Castle. |
